Storm drop heartbreaker

Released: November 18, 2017

CHARLOTTEOTWN - The Island Storm dropped their season opener against the NBL Canada expansion St. John’s Edge 97-96 on Saturday night at the Eastlink Centre.

The Edge struck first with a dagger three-pointer before Franklin Session started the Storm off on an 11-0 run.  After some back-and-forth action, Wayne McCullough knocked down two three-pointers in a row to give the Storm a slim 27-26 lead after the first quarter.

After another quick bucket by the Edge to start the second quarter, Chris Johnson set up Brad States before knocking down a shot of his own to put the Storm on another big 9-0 run. After some Storm foul trouble, the Edge took a 52-48 lead into the half.

It was a defensive battle in the third quarter as neither team was able to establish a foothold, leading to the Storm trailing 73-72 in a tight game.

The offensive stalemate continued into the final quarter as a solid three minutes went by in the middle of the frame without a point by either side.  Andre Stringer brought the Storm back to life to give them just their second lead of the second half with three minutes to play.

After multiple lead changes in the final two minutes, Session went beast mode, knocking down shot after shot before a last second three-pointer by the Edge gave them a 97-96.

Up next for the Storm is the start of a home-and-home against the Moncton Magic, 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 23 at the Eastlink Centre.
