Released: April 08, 2017

By Carson Deveau

The Island Storm hand the London Lightning only their fifth loss of season, defeating them 105-101 in Saturday afternoon NBL Canada action.

With the victory, the Storm snapped London’s nine game winning streak and drops them to 27-5 on the season.

The Storm started Akeem Wright instead of Akeem Ellis to match up better against the size of the Lightning.  Wright used his size early to get to the basket, finish the tough layup, and get the Storm on the scoreboard.

Both teams went back-and-forth throughout much of the opening quarter, but it was the Storm able to gain separation and take a 27-19 lead over the first place Lightning going into the second quarter.

The Storm’s strong play continued for early on in the second, as they were able to extend their lead to ten at one point.

London didn’t back down, and battled back to bring the game within two possessions as they trailed the Storm by 55-51 going into halftime.

The third quarter was much of the same for the Storm, who fought off London to take a 78-67 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The first place Lightning didn’t back down, as they started the quarter on a 12-6 run and tied the game at 84-84 with 4:46 remaining.

A three and then a crafty layup by Akeem Ellis reclaimed the lead for the Storm shortly after. London answered back with a couple quick baskets, and defensive stops to bring the game to within two points, 102-100, with 36 seconds left.

Jahii Carson made one of two foul shots to give the Storm a three-point lead.

The Lightning missed their next shot, which sealed the victory for the Storm, taking it 105-101.

Akeem Ellis played huge for the Storm. Along with hitting the key three-pointer in the fourth to end a scoring drought for the team, he also finished with a team-high 23 points. Royce White finished with a game-high 26 points for London in the loss.
