CHARLOTTETOWN – The Island Storm announced Wednesday it is appealing the one-game suspension to forward Du'vaughn Maxwell for an incident involving the Moncton Magic head coach, which took place at Eastlink Centre on Boxing Day.
The appeal is based on the position that the Moncton head coach entered the Storm’s bench area immediately after the game. The opposing coach stepped onto the playing surface to shove Maxwell from behind.
The Storm contends that while Maxwell did reach out to touch the coach’s arm following the push, he was reacting to the initial aggression and was not an equal participant. The Moncton head coach was given an equal one-game suspension for the incident.
This is the second incident involving the Moncton head coach making physical contact with a member of the Storm this season. The league office also reviewed the previous incident, which occurred on Nov. 23.
“The NBL has a well-defined process for this situation and we will follow that process to get to the appropriate conclusion,” said Storm owner Duncan Shaw.
Maxwell will continue to dress for the Storm until the appeal is heard.
No date has been set for the appeal at this time.
The Storm returns to Eastlink Centre on Saturday, Jan. 6 when the Windsor Express makes its lone appearance in P.E.I. during the regular season. Tipoff is 7pm.
