Storm gets statement win over Moncton

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Island Storm won the opening game of their home-and-home series against the visiting Moncton Magic, 120-116, on Thursday night at the Eastlink Centre.

Chris Johnson opened the scoring for the Storm who went shot-for-shot with Moncton in the first six-minutes before Franklin Session sank three-straight free throws for the Storm, who finished the quarter 6-for-7 from the line.  The Magic ended the first quarter with a 35-29 lead over the Storm.

Session picked up in the second quarter where he left off with a big steal and bucket to get the Storm rolling.  Riding a fast start from Session, the Storm outscored the Magic by four-points in the quarter and brought themselves within two-points of the Magic, trailing 55-53 at the half.

The Storm took their first lead of the game minutes into the third quarter with help from Andre Stringer, Du’Vaughn Maxwell and Tyler Scott who all hit three-point shots for the Storm throughout the third quarter, before Scott finished with a buzzer-beater three-pointer to give the Storm a 91-82 lead heading into the fourth.

Anthony Anderson and former Storm player Terry Thomas led a strong push by the Magic in the fourth quarter. Scott hit another three-pointer for the Storm to extend the lead with less than two minutes to play before Maxwell, Stringer and Session chipped in to help the Storm close out a 120-116 win at home.

Session and Maxwell finished with a team-high 24 points for the Storm while the Magic’s Anderson had a game-high 25 points.

The Storm finishes their home-and-home against the Magic 7 p.m. on Saturday night at the Moncton Coliseum before heading back home to take on the Cape Breton Highlanders Friday Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. from the Eastlink Centre.
