Storm signs Canadian vet Chris Johnson

Released: October 05, 2017

The Island Storm has announced Thursday the signing of Canadian basketball star Chris Johnson.

The six-foot-five dynamic scorer from North Preston, Nova Scotia was an NCAA Atlantic 10 tournament champion in 2012 with the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. He played two seasons with the Bonnies, averaging 12.6 points in the 2012-13 season.

After professional seasons in the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal, Johnson wanted to sign close to home to continue his professional career closer to family and encourage his younger brother both on and off the court.

“I’m close with my family. My younger brother is in Grade 11 and is thinking about going to school in the states next year for basketball so we made the decision as a family.  I think I can nurture him on and off the court.”

It’s Johnson’s veteran experience that appeals to Storm Coach Tim Kendrick, he said.

“He’s a real solid veteran player who can play offense and defense for us.”

The respect is mutual between Kendrick and Johnson.

“I have lots of respect for Tim,” said Johnson.  “He’s a legend where I’m from.”

Johnson is a team player who wants to bring a positive influence and culture to the Storm this year, he said.

“I’m a competitor and I wanted to compete in the country I love.”

Johnson’s competitive spirit will help him in training camp to challenge for a starting spot on the Storm’s opening night roster, said Kendrick.

“He has the potential to be the best Canadian in the league.”

Now 29-years-old, Johnson has made it a priority to stay in top shape 12 months a year to be ready when his number is called.

“I have high standards for myself.  I think if we work hard and put in an honest effort the results will show for the team.”

Fans looking to get their first look at Johnson and the Storm can now purchase tickets at the Eastlink Centre box office. The season kicks off on November 18 at the Eastlink Centre against the expansion team from Newfoundland.
